How to Plan a Loft Conversion

    JackBy JackNovember 9, 2022Updated:November 26, 2022No Comments3 Mins Read

Loft conversions are a great way to use the space in your home that you may not have considered before. They can add value to your property, provide extra space for guests or even be used as a separate bedroom.

If you want to convert your loft into another room, there are a few things that you need to consider before getting started.

Here are some tips on how to plan a loft conversion:

    Measure the space

The first thing you need to do is measure the space in your home where you want to convert your loft. This will help determine exactly how much room there is for everything that needs to go in there, from furniture and decorations through to appliances like fridges and stoves. If it’s going to be used as an extra bedroom, then you’ll also need enough room for a bed and other furniture items like wardrobes or desks.

    Type of loft conversion

There are several different types of loft conversions available, each with their own benefits and drawbacks. For example, if you have enough space, you may wish to create an open-plan living space by converting the attic into an extra bedroom and adding a bathroom upstairs. This is ideal if you need more room for entertaining guests or hosting family gatherings. However, if you only have a small amount of space in your attic, it might be more beneficial to create a sleeping area on one side with a bathroom on the other.

    Layout of your home

Where is the best place for your new room? Are there any walls in the way which could be removed to create an open space? Or does the layout mean that it would be better to have two rooms instead? You also need to think about how easy it will be to access your new room once it has been created. If there are stairs leading up into it, then this could prove difficult for older people or those who are disabled anxnr.

    Planning permission

Before starting any work, you’ll need planning permission from your local council. You can find out what you need to do by contacting the council office in your area.

    Building regulations

Your loft will need to be structurally sound before you start work on it. A professional builder or architect will be able to advise you on whether it complies with building regulations and if any changes need to be made before creating an internal staircase or converting one into an external staircase.
